  • The Pirates won their second game of this west coast trip last night in thrilling fashion, beating the Diamondbacks 5-4 while pounding on 13 hits. Jason Grilli gave up a home run to lose the lead in the eighth, but Andrew McCutchen singled in Alex Presley with two outs in the top of the ninth to regain the lead. [Recap]
  • Jeff Karstens got through just one inning last night and was removed with shoulder inflammation. Also, Joel Hanrahan did not pitch because of a tight hamstring. Hanrahan is labeled as day-to-day but we haven't heard much on Karstens. The club can probably do without Karstens with A.J. Burnett coming up soon, but Hanrahan is a huge loss - let's hope it doesn't turn into anything more serious.
  • The offensive breakout was refreshing to see last night - although there was some very frustrating parts of the game. The Pirates had two on with nobody out in the eighth inning. Garrett Jones dropped a single in but Neil Walker was thrown out at second (which ended up making Jones hit a fielder's choice and not actually a hit). After that, Rod Barajas couldn't bring the runner on third home as he popped out, and Pedro Alvarez finished the inning with a fly out. That was tough to watch. The good news is that McCutchen, Walker, and Jones combined for ten hits and all five RBI. There set of the team was just 3/25 at the plate.
  • We finish up this road trip today at 3:40 in the rubber match with the Diamondbacks. It's James McDonald against Daniel Hudson. The Pirates are off on Thursday and would love to play at home this weekend with a chance to get over the .500 mark.
