Pittsburgh Pirates Could Set a McRecord in 2012

Comments
My blog's disposition was talked about on ESPN's Baseball Today podcast with Eric Karabell and Mark Simon the other day. The question was raised, can the Pirates set a MLB record for most McPlayers on the 25-man roster. Thanks to help from Elias Sports Bureau, we have an answer:
Mark Simon Tweet

The 1912 McTigers: Red McDermott, Dan McGarvey, Jim McGarr, Deacon McGuire, and Pat McGehee

The 1908 McRed Sox: Amby McConnell, Jim McHale, Ed McFarland, Deacon McGuire (manager), and Doc McMahon

The 1902 McOrioles: Dan McGann, Herm McFarland, John McGraw, Sport McAllister, and Joe McGinnity

What baffles me is that Deacon McGuire and John McGraw also managed their teams (McGuire managed the Red Sox, not the Tigers). Personally I never knew that guys used to manage and play at the same time, but it's certainly interesting that they did. Talk about McMulti-Tasking.

Anyways, those are the only three instances in which five McPlayers played on the same team in the same year. The Pirates will at least tie that record this year, and they will probably break it. Andrew McCutchen, James McDonald, Casey McGehee, and Nate McLouth are sure bets to make the team out of spring training, and Michael McKenry is a pretty good bet as well. If Daniel McCutchen makes an appearance (which he probably will) or Kyle McPherson makes his debut this year, the Pirates will be in a McClass of their own.

And I started all of this when there was just one Mc on the team.

A.J. Burnett Fouls Ball Off Eye

Comments
You know the MLB season is about to begin when you start hearing stuff like this.

A.J. Burnett, the Pirates newest pitcher, fouled a ball off his right eye during a bunting competition today at Pirate City. Nobody thinks it's a serious thing, but either way he's flying to Pittsburgh tonight to have it looked at.

Who knows, maybe an eye patch is all Burnett needs to really become a Pirate.

ESPN Baseball Today Talks About The "Mc" Effect

Former Pirates pre-game and post-game radio host David Todd tweeted this morning:

The guy has a point. Check out these statistics from two seasons ago, 2010:

NameStartsInningsERAK/9BB/9
Rudy Owens261502.467.91.4
Bryan Morris24133.23.038.32.6
Justin Wilson26142.23.098.54.5
Jeff Locke271443.568.71.6
Now check out these same stats from last year, 2011:

NameStartsInningsERAK/9BB/9
Rudy Owens21112.15.055.72.6
Bryan Morris6783.357.43.8
Justin Wilson21124.14.136.84.8
Jeff Locke27153.13.708.23.2

That's some serious regression. Two years ago we thought all four of these guys would be competing for rotation spots this spring. Now none of them are. Jeff Locke was the only pitcher that had what I would call a good season last year. He pitched very well in AAA and got a September call-up, which he didn't impress too many people with but you can't judge much from his first big league stint. Rudy Owens looked like a sure thing to make the big league rotation someday. Nobody ever thought he was going to be a top of the rotation arm but we were all pretty confident he would be a solid four or five guy. Now we aren't expecting much at all from him after he got knocked around in AAA last year.

Justin Wilson and Bryan Morris have been moved to the bullpen, which isn't something you want to see. Bullpen arms are easy to come by, and you really want your minor league starters to stay starters. Morris and Wilson both have very good stuff, they can both reach the mid and upper 90's with their heat, but they just didn't show anything else last year and struggled a lot in their starting roles. Now we are looking at these guys for bullpen depth in 2012 instead of guys who could possibly help the rotation.

It's frustrating, it really is. The Pirates can never seem to get a break. The future is still bright, but it would be a lot brighter if our 2010 Big Four pitching prospects hadn't fallen off the table.

Obviously these guys are still young and could very well bounce back in 2012, but the regression is still irritating, and all too common for us Pirates fans to see.

Shop Joel Hanrahan

Comments
One of the Pirates best players in 2011 was closer Joel Hanrahan. The hammer posted a ridiculous 1.83 ERA and struck out eight batters per nine innings.

He turned into one of the best closers in the game and a valuable commodity for the Pittsburgh Pirates to have. However, the team only won 72 games and had their 19th straight losing season.

A top of the run closer seems like something that should be a luxury for a struggling young team. It's simply not as important as having starting pitchers and position players that can win games before the 9th inning.

Guess what? Joel Hanrahan is scheduled to be a free agent at the end of this 2012 season. You know what kind of money he'll get on the market if he pitches anywhere near as well this year as he did last year? Too much for the Pirates to afford. There is no chance that the Pirates give Hanrahan what he's valued for to keep him in Pittsburgh after this season, it's simply not how this team is run.

Josh Harrison Takes Grounders At Shortstop

Comments
The only real position battle going on in camp this year for the Pirates is the backup infield spots. The team has a solid starting shortstop in Clint Barmes, but there isn't an obvious name that is going to be in Pittsburgh backing him up.

Sadly enough, one of the Pirates next best options is Chase d'Arnaud. The kid spent some time at the big league level last year and looked awful. All signs point to the Pirates keeping him in AAA at the beginning of the season so he can continue to work and get everyday playing time. d'Arnaud is still young, and to have him in a bench role in 2012 certainly wouldn't help his development. There is little to no chance Chase makes the team out of spring training.

That leaves a few names like Anderson Hernandez, Yamaico Navarro, and Josh Harrison. None of those guys are big league caliber players, but sadly enough one of them is going to have to be our backup shortstop. Everybody's favorite for that job is Harrison.

But wait, something you're forgetting - Josh Harrison doesn't play shortstop... or does he?

No, he doesn't. He has started 359 baseball games in his career, and just one of them has been at shortstop. That game was last year in Indianapolis. He made an error.

That said, here's a picture of Harrison taking groundballs at shortstop Sunday in Bradenton, compliments of RumBunter.

That's interesting to me. I understand you don't have to be a defensive wizard to fill the role of a bench shortstop, but a guy that's played just one game in his career there? I don't know about that.

Who knows, maybe the Pirates think Harrison can play shortstop well enough to make the team as the primary backup there. If that's true, I'm all for it. I really don't want to see Anderson Hernandez on this team, and I don't know about Yamaico Navarro yet. I would like to see Navarro get a bunch of at-bats early on in the season, and he can only get them in the minor leagues, so I might lean towards making him the starting second or third basemen there at season's beginning just to see what he can do with the stick. Navarro is a guy that still has some room to grow and turn into a possible big league starter, you can't say that for Harrison. He's bound to be a bench depth guy that can help you in different ways. I want d'Arnaud and Navarro to get starts at the beginning of the season.

We'll see what the Pirates do with Harrison when games start this coming weekend. Chances are they'll try him at shortstop and hope he's good enough to take to Pittsburgh come April, but with that one career start under his belt, I'm not betting on it.

Ryan Braun's Press Conference

Comments
If you haven't seen it yet, here's Ryan Braun's press conference from earlier today. Obviously, he straight up denied ever having any illegal substance in his body, which seems kind of ridiculous, but I don't know the whole story here. He comes out and says how big of a struggle it was having everything he's worked for in his entire life be questioned, and I actually feel for him there. Let's just say the appeal was figured correctly and Braun really didn't take any illegal substances (or take any knowingly). Wouldn't that be extremely frustrating to have everyone come out and accuse you of cheating at the one thing you've been working your entire life to be successful at? Hate him or love him, you have to recognize Braun's success thus far. He's been one of the best players in the game, and nobody deserves to be attacked unfairly. That's assuming he really didn't cheat, which we'll probably never know for sure. For now we have to assume the best because he won his appeal and will not be suspended.

For now, at least we can make fun of his public speaking ability, it's not too great.

Pirates Running Out of Luck? Braun Wins Appeal

Comments
Last December I was so happy that Braun failed that drug test that I made a really immature post about him having herpes. I justified that immaturity with the fact that nobody in Pittsburgh likes Ryan Braun and it was okay to derail guys who cheat. However, now the worst thing that could have happened has happened, and Braun somehow won his appeal. There are no details as to why he won his appeal, but he'll be playing the full season and now we have to watch people feel sorry for him for being falsely accused and whatnot.

I really don't like Ryan Braun. I think he's an arrogant jerk, however, for now I can't sit here and accuse him of cheating, and that really sucks. We all love having someone to hate, and Braun was that guy. Obviously we all still hate him, if not more than usual right now (for unfair reasons), but we can't sit here and call him a cheater. For whatever reason, Braun won his appeal and we should be fair to him and just kind of forget it ever happened.

At least Prince Fielder isn't coming back.

We're about to start a new season of baseball, and the beat writers are off and running. Here are some of the big headlines for the last few days of Spring Training:

"McCutchen Eager to Build on Last Season"
"Hurdle Seeks More K's on Mound, Fewer at Bat"
"McGehee Looking to Start Over After Nightmare Season"
"McKenry Focused on Getting Better Today"
"Lefty Prospect Locke Looking to Impress"

I'd sure hope our best player wants to get better this season. I'd sure hope our manager wants us to strike out less at the plate and record more strikeouts on the mound, I'd sure hope that Casey McGehee doesn't want to suck again this year, I'd sure hope that Michael McKenry wants to get improve, I'd sure hope that Jeff Locke wants to impress someone.

Come on now.

I understand the beat writers have a tough job. When you interview a a profession athlete, you aren't going to get much. You can basically predict everything an athlete will say these days, just because everyone hears everything they say and they don't want to get in trouble. All you're going to hear is "yeah I'm working hard to get better" or something of that sort. I don't blame the writers, there is nothing they can do. But can't we be a little more creative with our articles?

Can the Pittsburgh Pirates Make a Run in 2012?

Comments
The question is posed every spring. Will this be the year the Pittsburgh Pirates break the losing streak? They already hold the all-time sports record for most consecutive losing seasons, and math suggests that it can't last forever, but when will it end?

The Pirates played with our hearts last year as they found themselves in first place in mid-July, but when all was said and done, they had number 19 in the books.

So is there anything to suggest that 2012 will be any different?

For one, the division is a lot worse. Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder are gone, and Ryan Braun will be suspended for 50 games. This division was average at best before all of this happened, and now it has to be the worst division in baseball on paper. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it took just 90 wins to take the NL Central this year.

But should we even be talking about winning the division? I think we should focus on getting win #81 and going from there. Can the Pirates do that?

Pirates Starting Pitcher F/X (Updated)

Comments
Last month I made a post with a comparison of all the Pirates starting pitchers' 2011 pitch F/X. Now that we've added A.J. Burnett I figured I'd update the charts. Here's the data:

Burnett is the only guy that's going to be throwing any thing close to a knucklecurveball this year, so you can't really compare him to the others guys too well. He throws harder than everyone else and gets a lot more whiffs than everyone else (which isn't represented in this data). He is a pure strikeout pitcher, which the Pirates have not had in a long time. It should fun to watch him work this year. If he can limit the home runs and take advantage of the league change, he could be a very exciting pitcher.

Pirates Trying To Steal My McThunder

Comments

Spring Training - Day 2 - Running Updates

Comments
Lots of A.J. Burnett stuff on today's docket, as he is officially a Pirate and in camp. Since I'm in Waynesburg and not in Florida, I'm just going to post a tweet widget that shows the beat writers that are actually in Florida, giving us the updates:

*update 9:22am* Check out this video that Kristy Robinson (from Pirates Prospects) posted of Burnett talking to the media. In the last 15 seconds, Burnett tells us that his wife does fly and went with him on several trips last season. What's that about? The media was completely wrong.

Pirates Place Gustavo Nunez On 60 Day DL

The Pirates put Rule V pick Gustavo Nunez on the 60-Day DL to make room for A.J. Burnett on the 40-man roster. As expected, the Pirates will milk out Nunez's injury so he doesn't have to start the year in Pittsburgh.

Did You Know Who Exicardo Cayones Was?

Comments
Wrote this post about the recent A.J. Burnett trade, and how I had literally never heard of Exicardo Cayones before today. Early 25 Man Roster Prediction

Comments
Catchers:
Rod Barajas
Michael McKenry

First Base:
Garrett Jones
Casey McGehee

Second Base:
Neil Walker
Josh Harrison

Shortstop:
Clint Barmes
Yamaico Navarro

Third Base:
Pedro Alvarez

Outfield:
Alex Presley
Andrew McCutchen
Jose Tabata
Nate McLouth

Starting Pitchers:
Erik Bedard
A.J. Burnett
Charlie Morton (he'll probably start the season on the DL, so this list is as of when he comes back I guess)
James McDonald
Jeff Karstens

Relief Pitchers:
Joel Hanrahan
Evan Meek
Chris Resop
Tony Watson
Jason Grilli
Kevin Correia
Chris Leroux

Now, in alphabetic order:

Alvarez, Pedro
Barajas, Rod
Barmes, Clint
Bedard, Erik
Burnett, A.J.
Correia, Kevin
Grilli, Jason
Hanrahan, Joel
Harrison, Josh
Jones, Garrett
Karstens, Jeff
Leroux, Chris
McCutchen, Andrew
McDonald, James
McGehee, Casey
McKenry, Michael
McLouth, Nate
Meek, Evan
Morton, Charlie
Navarro, Yamaico
Presley, Alex
Resop, Chris
Tabata, Jose
Walker, Neil
Watson, Tony

If that prediction is correct, we'll have 4 players that have last names starting with "B", and 5 players that have last names starting with "Mc". Daniel McCutchen is also a candidate to make the roster, which would bump that up to 6.

So we're looking at 10 of the 25 players on the roster having one of those two last name attributes. Crazy.

We'll have much more, as for now I'm gonna work on some kind of "killer B" photoshop.

Pirates, Yankees To Send Burnett Deal To Commissioner

Comments
It looks like the A.J. Burnett is just about finalized, but the teams have to send the deal to the commissioner's office for approval because of the large amounts of money involved. This isn't the NBA, so the commissioners will accept the deal and the Pirates will have their new starter.

From what I can tell, the Pirates are going to be paying Burnet $13 million for 2 years and sending 2 single-A prospects to New York.

It took over a week to get done, but it looks like Burnett will be the newest Pittsburgh Pirate by tomorrow, and will report to Bradenton on Sunday.

The deal isn't completed yet, but it seems like the Pirates will be paying $13 million for two years of A.J. Burnett when the deal does get done. All that's left to decide is which prospects the Pirates will send to New York.

The soft deadline for this deal is Saturday, so I would expect it to be completed by tomorrow night.

  • The A.J. Burnett trade will be completed by Saturday, if it's completed at all. That seems to be the deadline, as the Yankees don't want to have him report to spring training while rumors are still swirling. I believe the deal will get done, just because the Yankees have very little choice at this point. The Pirates know that, and that's why this is taking so long.
  • Sean's Ramblings is hosting the 4th annual Pittsburgh Sports Blog Tournament. You need to go vote for me ten times, at least.
  • The Pirates have signed Chris Gimenez and David Valesente
  • Pitchers and catchers report Sunday, we're getting close, folks.
