Wednesday 8/15 Minor League Roundup

AAA Indianapolis | Rochester 6 Indianapolis 2
Justin Wilson couldn't quite repeat his eight-inning no-hitter from his previous outing, but he still pitched a solid six innings in a loss to Rochester. Wilson gave up two first-inning runs but didn't let anyone else score during his six frames. He gave up five hits and walked only one while striking out four. Daniel McCutchen couldn't keep the game close though, allowing three runs, two of them earned, in the seventh. Jo-Jo Reyes gave up the final run in his first game back with Indianapolis after a lengthy stint on the disabled list. The Indians didn't score until plating two runs in the ninth on a home run by Matt Hague. That was just Hague's third homer of the year after hitting seven in Spring Training for the Pirates. Hague went 2-for-4 on the day, and Brock Holt went 2-for-3 with a double and a walk to raise his average in 30 AAA at-bats to .367. Jeff Clement hit his 35th double of the season, and Yamaico Navarro stole his ninth base. Jose Tabata went 1-for-4, and Alex Presley struck out three times in four times up.

AA Altoona | Portland 1 Altoona 0
The Curve fell in a pitchers' duel with Kris Johnson losing out to Portland. Johnson pitched six innings and allowed one run while striking out six. He gave up five hits and walked one, but the Curve offense recorded only six hits on its own and never scored. Mike Colla did avoid disaster in the seventh without allowing a run despite walking two and giving up a hit. He struck out two. Victor Black continued to move past his bump in the road a couple of weeks ago by striking out two in his only scoreless inning. You almost have to wonder if Black could somehow help the major league bullpen in September despite his proneness for wildness, but he's now struck out 73 batters in 51.1 innings. Adalberto Santos had the only multi-hit game for Altoona (who else) by singling twice and hiking his average to .390 in 164 at-bats. Kelson Brown doubled for the team's only extra-base hit, and Jarek Cunningham walked twice.

A West Virginia | West Virginia 7 Greensboro 6
After blowing an early 5-0 lead, West Virginia nullified Greensboro's rally with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to outlast the Grasshoppers. The Power were paced by the first two hitters in the order, Alen Hanson and Taylor Lewis. Hanson went 2-for-2 with three walks and Lewis broke out of a massive slump to go 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Hanson's average jumped back up to .311 with the perfect day. Francisco Aponte had two hits, including a triple, and Junior Sosa added two hits as well. Aponte also stole his fifth base of the season. The relief pitching led the way for the Power after starter Mike Jefferson wasted the team's five-run advantage. Jefferson lasted 4.2 innings and gave up six hits and six runs. He walked three and whiffed four. Joan Montero earned the win with 2.1 shutout innings and striking out three. The Kilcrease fake brothers, Robbie and Nathan, finished with a combined two shutout frames with Nathan grabbing his 12th save.

A Bradenton | Charlotte 6 Bradenton 3 (10 innings)
Zach Foster gave up three runs in the top of the tenth inning to seal the loss for the Marauders. Jameson Taillon was uneven in his start, allowing two runs in his five innings, but both were on solo home runs. Taillon gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three. His ERA at Bradenton now sits at 3.82. Bradenton battled back from a 2-0 deficit to take a 3-2 lead in the seventh inning on Dan Grovatt's pinch-hit two-run home run. The blast was Grovatt's sixth of the year. But Josh Poytress gave up a run in the top of the eighth that sent the game to extra frames. Gustavo Nunez's rehab was sent to Bradenton and he hit two singles in his first game as the Marauders' leadoff hitter. Benji Gonzalez and Mel Rojas collected the only other hits, as Bradenton mustered just five on the day. Alex Dickerson had a rough day, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

A State College | Jamestown 9 State College 2
The Spikes laid an egg in their first game back off the All Star break. They only collected four hits, gave up nine runs and committed three errors. D.J. Crumlich doubled and had two of the team's four hits. Samuel Gonzalez and Jodaneli Carvajal had the only other hits for the Spikes, but Carvajal and Crumlich had two of State College's three errors. Chris Diaz did walk twice. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Jason Creasy couldn't make it out of the second inning. Creasy gave up five runs, although just one of those runs were earned, in 1.2 innings. Creasy gave up four hits and walked three while fanning just one batter. Four relievers combined to give up four runs, but in a theme for the day, just one of those four was earned as well.
