Tuesday 8/7 Minor League Roundup

AAA Indianapolis | Charlotte 12 Indianapolis 2
The Indians faltered both offensively and pitching-wise against the Charlotte Knights. The team mustered only five hits and two runs. The main highlight was the Triple-A debut of Brock Holt, who was promoted from Altoona earlier in the day. Holt collected his first hit for Indianapolis, and he went 1-for-3 with a walk on the day. Although Jose Tabata's eight-game hit streak ended on Monday, he picked right back up by going 2-for-4 and his sixth double for the Indians. Anderson Hernandez had a perfect night at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk. On the pitching side, Daniel Cabrera got roughed up for seven runs and seven hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out five but also walked five. The potential major league bullpen reinforcements weren't helpful however. Evan Meek gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning, and the normally-reliable Bryan Morris allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings.

AA Altoona | Bowie 9 Altoona 8(10 innings)
Altoona came back from an early 7-0 deficit to force extra innings with two runs in the ninth, but Hunter Strickland gave up a run in the top of the 10th for the loss. He gave up just the one run in two innings. Starter Brandon Cumpton struggled and lasted only two innings, giving up six runs, despite only three of them being earned. He walked three batters and gave up two hits. Kris Harvey saved the bullpen by pitching four innings in relief of Cumpton and allowing two runs, one earned, and Mike Colla hurled two shutout frames to key the offensive comeback. Drew Maggi, the newly-anointed leadoff hitter and shortstop with Brock Holt off to Indianapolis, went 3-for-5 with a stolen base. Quincy Latimore smashed his 14th homer of the season in the third inning. Ramon Cabrera continued his hot streak with two hits and a double, and Stefan Welch also slapped two hits. Matt Curry hit his 29th double of the campaign, and Oscar Tejada also doubled.

A West Virginia | West Virginia (no game)
West Virginia was off and returns to action against Lexington on Wednesday with Zack Von Rosenberg as the projected starter.

A Bradenton | Charlotte 8 Bradenton 1
The Marauders continued the system-wide problem of losing tonight by getting blown out at Charlotte. Bradenton was plagued by two big innings, as starter Eliecer Navarro allowed four runs in the third and Quinton Miller gave up four in his only inning of work in the sixth. Navarro lasted five innings and gave up eight hits, one walk and three strkeouts. Dan Grovatt hit his 20th double, walked, and had the only Bradenton RBI. Carlos Mesa went 2-for-4 and Alex Dickerson and Kawika Emsley-Pai recorded the team's only two other hits. The Marauders did walk six times, two of which came from Justin Howard.

A State College | State College 4 Batavia 2 (10 innings)
Clay Holmes is rapidly ascending the Pirates' prospect lists and another five shutout innings only show why. Holmes allowed one hit and walked two while striking out three. The sparkling outing lowered his ERA on the season to an infinitesimal 0.83 in 43.1 innings. Holmes' walk rate is a little high with 20 on the season as opposed to 30 strikeouts, but he's offset potential damage by giving up just 19 hits in his nine starts. Unfortunately, Holmes wasn't rewarded with the win because Kevin Kleis gave up two runs in his second game after rehabbing an injury in the GCL to tie the score at 2-2. But Orlando Castro and Kyle Haynes combined for four scoreless innings and the Spikes finally broke the tie with two runs in the top of the tenth. Offensively, Chris Diaz slammed his first professional home run in the fourth inning. Walker Gourley, D.J. Crumlich and Jodaneli Carvajal all had two hits for State College. Gourley and Samuel Gonzalez each had a double.
