8/19 Recap | Pirates 6 Cardinals 3

When your scheduled starter for the next day is the winning pitcher, you know you just played a wild game.

The Pirates and Cardinals went a major league season high 19 innings and the Pirates came out on top by the score of 6-3. Andrew McCutchen had an infield single to tie the game in the sixth and then a two RBI single in the 19th to give the team some insurance runs. The winning run came on a Pedro Alvarez solo home run to right center field.

Jose Tabata had two hits in his return to the lineup after Starling Marte was placed on the disabled list. Josh Harrison, Travis Snider, Clint Barmes, Garrett Jones, and Jordy Mercer also added two hits each.

It’s hard to remember right now, but Jeff Karstens started the game and pitched seven strong innings, allowing just two runs on two hits. Jason Grilli pitched a scoreless eighth and Kevin Correia got the game to the 11th where Chris Resop would pitch three scoreless innings before Joel Hanrahan put up a zero of his own. Jared Hughes pitched a scoreless 15th and Juan Cruz allowed the Cardinals to retie it in the 17th. Wandy Rodriguez, who was scheduled to pitch tomorrow, pitched the final two innings and got his first Pirate win. Wild game, and a very good one to win.
