A.J. Burnett came away with a no decision tonight, but pitched fairly well. He threw 110 pitches and allowed four runs. Despite allowing a run in the sixth, he worked out of a huge bases loaded jam. After punching out
Chase Headley looking, he got
Carlos Quentin to bounce into a beautifully executed 5-4-3 double play.
Tony Watson allowed one of Burnett's runs to score and had a strikeout.
Chad Qualls allowed a run to score in the eighth.
Jason Grilli pitched the bottom of the ninth and put runners on second and third. Evereth Cabrera hit a shot to right center field that
Andrew McCutchen made one of the plays/catchs of the year, which saved the game for the Bucs.
Daniel McCutchen allowed a walk off two run home run to Chase Headley in the bottom of the tenth inning, giving the Pirates their first extra inning loss of the season.
A run was scored on a throwing error by the Padres and
Rod Barajas picked up his fifth hit of August, with an RBI double.
Garrett Jones had two home runs and was the hero of the night for the Pirates, despite losing the game. He hit a solo home run in the sixth inning and with two outs in the top of the ninth, down two runs, hit a two run home run off of
Dale Thayer to tie the game up, and keep the Pirates hopes alive.
The Pirates will try to not be swept for the second time this year against the Padres, and are anxiously waiting to get out of the California, the state they have posted a 1-7 record in.
