Friday 7/13 Minor League Roundup

AAA Indianapolis | Columbus 2 Indianapolis 0
Columbus starter Jeanmar Gomez totally silenced the Indians' offense as Tony Sanchez and Chase d'Arnaud provided the only hits in the shutout. d'Arnaud was also picked off and caught stealing by Gomez, the first time he's been caught stealing this year in 24 tries. Starling Marte and Yamaico Navarro were the only other Indians to reach base as both walked once. Indianapolis starting pitcher Daniel Cabrera nearly matched Gomez but allowed one run in both the third and fourth innings to suffer the loss. Otherwise, Cabrera was stellar as he also went the distance for a complete game and gave up six hits, two walks and two runs while fanning two.

AA Altoona | Akron 3 Altoona 0
Like their older brothers, the Curve's bats didn't show up against the rival Aeroes. Altoona didn't manage its first hit until an Adalberto Santos single in the seventh inning although the team had walked five times to that point. Santos reached base three times (walking twice) and Brock Holt and Ramon Cabrera had one hit apiece to equal the Curve's total of three for the contest. Matt Curry also walked twice, and Robbie Grossman also walked. Kyle McPherson was shaky as he continued his comeback after missing the first two and a half months of the season. McPherson struck out seven in six innings and walked only one, but allowed eight hits and three runs to receive the loss. McPherson has walked only five and struck out 23 in his first 28.2 innings and five starts, so his peripheral statistics are excellent. But his ERA is 4.40, so when opponents actually are hitting the ball they're hitting it hard. McPherson is likely still getting his full strength and repertoire of pitches back.

A West Virginia | West Virginia 6 Rome 1 (Game 1) West Virginia 9 Rome 0 (Game 2)
The Power put on an offensive and pitching clinic against Rome by sweeping a double header and outscoring the Braves 15-1 in the process. West Virginia only allowed six hits across the 14 innings of action. Zack Dodson hurled a 7-inning complete game in the opener, giving up just one run, four hits and one walk while striking out three. Dodson's second straight solid outing lowered his ERA on the year to a still-too-high 5.36 but it's progress. In Game 2, Mike Jefferson pitched five shutout innings, allowing only two hits and no walks and striking out two. Robbie Kilcrease and Joan Montero finished the shutout. Offensively, just about every major Power player was involved. Gregory Polanco shined the brightest, going 4-for-7 on the day with a triple, walk, five RBIs and three steals, giving him 32 for the year. Alen Hanson went 3-for-7 on the day with 2 walks and a double. Jose Osuna went 3-for-7 with his 8th home run of the year and a walk. Taylor Lewis also stole three bases, all in the opener during his 2-for-8 day.

A Bradenton | Bradenton, Brevard County Postponed
Bradenton and Brevard County were rained out tonight.

A State College | State College 11 Staten Island 2
Although the peripheral numbers weren't good this evening, Luis Heredia had his fifth consecutive effective start for the Spikes. His five-inning, three-hit, three-walk, one-run and no-strikeout night earned him his first victory of the season and his ERA now stands at 1.13 through five starts and 24 innings. The bullpen only allowed one run in the next four innings, but the normally dormant Spike offense roared awake to back the pitching. Jacob Stallings had his best game since he was drafted, going 4-for-5 with two doubles to raise his average to .225. D.J. Crumlich and Walker Gourley each went 2-for-4 and Stallings, Barrett Barnes, Ryan Hornback and Yhonathan Barrios all drove in two runs apiece as part of the 13-hit barrage.
