5/16 Recap | Nationals 7 Pirates 4

The Pirates scored more runs than they were expected to on Wednesday night and still came up short in a 7-4 decision in Washington D.C.

Erik Bedard was victimized by the home run ball tonight, giving up three solo shots to Ian Desmond, Adam LaRoche, and Xavier Nady. Outside of those three pitches he was good, going six innings allowing four runs while striking out seven. The real killer on this side of the ball was Evan Meek, who loaded up the bases with a hit baseman and a walk before giving up a three run double to LaRoche. Meek was called up before the game and for some reason was pitching in a big spot in a one run game. The Pirates would put up a run in the next inning which would have tied it if Clint Hurdle would have put in a competent reliever.

The story on offense was Josh Harrison who was filling in for Pedro Alvarez. Harrison drove in three of the Pirates run, including hitting a two run home run in the seventh that got the Pirates within one run. Andrew McCutchen also had two hits, but no one else did much of anything.

The Pirates have now lost two in a row following their three game win streak and are back to three games below .500. They have one more game in D.C. before heading to Detroit for some interleague ball.
