Pirates Go Overslot To Sign Two Draft Picks

Jim Callis mentioned a couple of quick nuggets on the Pirates' 2011 draft class. The first comes via twitter that the Bucs have signed seventh-round pick, HS RHP Jake Burnette for $550k. Callis adds that the throws in the upper 80's, with a smooth delivery, and that he's projectable.

He also filed on Baseball America that the Pirates signed fifth-round pick , HS RHP Tyler Glasnow for $600k, the highest known deal outside of the top 65 picks. Glasnow is described as extremely projectable at 6-foot-7 with a fastball that can reach the low 90s.

The Pirates have not been shy about going over slot in recent seasons. They spent more money in the draft from 2008-2010 than any other team in baseball.

The prize remains second round pick, HS OF, Josh Bell, but few believe he can be signed.
