Offense and Starting Pitching Update

The Pirates are 2-8 in their last 10 games but played very well in this series with the Giants and took 2 of 3 from the defending World Series champs. Here's the update on the spreadsheet I've been keeping all season:

You can see that the starting pitching has not been good these last 10 games. The starters have a an ERA of 6.40 and have given up 11 home runs. You aren't going to win many games with starting pitching like that. The offense has been better than it has been all year, hitting .259 in these last 10 games, but isn't doing enough in the close games. The staff has allowed less than 5 runs in 7 of the last 10 games, and the Pirates have scored more than 3 runs only 3 of those games.

The season ERA for the pitching staff is now the all the way up to 4.14, it has inflated quite a bit since the all-star break, much as the smarter baseball fans expected. They seem to have put the losing streak behind them now and have the momentum moving into this weekend after a quality series win over the Giants. They head to Milwaukee to face the Brewers in a weekend series starting Friday; an absolutely huge series to gauge how this team matches up with their biggest competition in the division. It would be huge to win this series, but very demoralizing to not be swept again.
