Pirates Batters Count Analysis

I did this earlier in the year, so consider this an update.

What I have done is collect all the information for the Pirates leading 12 batters (in plate appearances) of hits per at-bat in each individual count they have ended their plate appearance after. What you'll be seeing is a count followed by a number for plate appearances, at-bats, and hits. It is only considered a plate appearance/at-bat if the hitter either reaches base or makes an out on that given pitch. Here's the goods:

and here's the totals for those 12 batters:

How about this, Matt Diaz has been in a 3-0 count just one time this year. Ridiculous.

Not surprisingly, the Pirates are bad when behind in the count. They are hitting just .179 when facing counts of 0-1, 0-2, or 1-2. They're hitting .346 when ahead in the count (counts of 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 2-1, 3-1), which looks good, but really isn't that great. When a Pirate hitter gets 2-strike on him, you can forget about it because they just .172 in given situations.

This team has shown a lot of plate patience this year, but still doesn't have the numbers to show for it. It's a bunch of young, immature hitters that can look really good some times, but really bad even more of those times.

This post probably didn't do anything at all for you, but it was the best I could muster on this off day.
