3/15 Recap | Pirates 17 Twins 6

The Pirates brought the bats to play the Twins today. And I mean they really brought the bats. They scored ten times in the first inning on ten hits. For the game they scored 17 runs on 19 hits. Alex Presley, Garrett Jones, and Matt Hague all homered and had three hits. Casey McGehee and Josh Harrison had two hit games, and too many others to name added base knocks on the day. It was an incredible display and has the Pirates near the top of the league in all sorts of spring training offensive categories.

The Bucs had seven extra base hits and had 11 players register hits. Just a wild game at the plate. It all started against Twins starter Terry Doyle, so not exactly a big league arm, but it remains incredibly impressive.

The pitching normally doesn’t matter much when your team scores 17 runs, but in a spring training game there is more to worry about than just winning the game. Jo-Jo Reyes started the game and gave up four runs in 2.1 innings on five hits while walking three. Not an impressive start for Reyes. Daniel McCutchen threw two-thirds of an inning scoreless, Daniel Cabrera and Doug Slaten added scoreless innings, and Juan Cruz and Chris Leroux gave up single runs while working innings each.
