Comeback Kids | Pirates 8 Diamondbacks 5

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a very eventful weekend, taking 2 of 3 from the Philadelphia Phillies. An off day Monday wasn't really an off day for fans because of the MLB Draft, which kept Pirates buzz going strong. After 7 innings Tuesday night, it seemed like the team was trying to kill some of that buzz.

Fortunately, the Pirates decided to play all 9 innings and used a 5-run bottom of the 8th to propel themselves to their 29th win of the year.

The Pirates got down early in this one as Kevin Correia gave up a first inning home run to Kelly Johnson. However they bounced back quickly and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd off the bats of Chris Snyder (sacrifice fly) and Ronny Cedeno (2-out single). They extended their lead to 3 with another Snyder sac fly in the 4th, but then Correia started getting hit around. The Diamondbacks battled back in the 5th and took the lead back with a 3-run inning, which ended Correia's night and his bid for his league leading 9th win.

Correia got hit hard tonight but kept his team in the game as he pitched 5 innings and gave up 4 earned runs. The 8 hits KC allowed was the 3rd most of any of his starts this year.

The Diamondbacks got their third home run of the night from Chris Young in the top of the 8th to take a 2-run lead, but after that it was all Buccos.

Garrett Jones led off the Pirates half of the inning with a pinch-hit double and scored when Jose Tabata hit a 2-bagger of his own. Josh Harrison then came up and rolled a single up the middle on an 0-2 pitch. Xavier Paul laid a bunt down and reached when catcher Miguel Montero fired to second too late to get Harrison. Andrew McCutchen drew a four-pitch walk and Lyle Overbay cleared the bases with a gap shot on a 3-1 pitch. All 5 of those runs came off of David Hernandez, who didn't even record an out.

Joel Hanrahan dominated the D'Backs in the 9th with 2 strikeouts and a popout and the Pirates were once again one game away from that ever so elusive .500 mark.

Tomorrow will be an interesting game for sure. It's Paul Maholm on the mound for the Pirates, and Zach Duke on the mound for the Diamondbacks. You're not going to want to miss that one. I'll be at the game, and you should be too.
