I've seen some speculation that the Angels will be looking to move Vernon Wells when the trade deadline rolls around. The Angels have a surplus of outfielders already, and don't have much reason to keep a big contract like Wells around when they can trade him for some salary relief.
Wells hasn't played since May 20 after tearing a ligament in his thumb. He's on the 60-day DL right now but looks to make his return in late July or early August. It would be a bit risky to bring in a guy that hadn't played for two months, but Wells is a proven slugger. He did struggle a bit last year hitting .218/.248/.412, but wasn't an everyday player at times and that could have effected him. For his career he's a .274/.322/.468 hitter with a couple of 30 homer seasons under his belt. There's no doubt that Wells would make the Pirates offense better if they penciled him in at a corner outfield spot, assuming he's healthy.
The problem is that Wells has a huge contract, he's making $21 MM this year. The Angels would obvious pick up a majority of that if they traded him, and there's a good chance the Pirates wouldn't have to give up much in terms of prospects to get him - which makes this deal somewhat enticing. There aren't any legitimate rumors about the Pirates showing interest, this is just speculation.
The Trade Deadline Target Tracker has been updated with Wells name.
