Saturday 7/7 | Pirates News, Notes, and Links

  • The Pirates saw their four game winning streak come to an end as they were beaten by the San Francisco Giants on Friday night by the score of 6-5. Erik Bedard had a rough go of it allowing five runs in the fourth inning and being removed after recording just 11 outs. Pedro Alvarez homered in the game and the offense looked pretty good against a solid pitching staff. Here's the recap.
  • I've been thinking a lot about the trade deadline recently, and I put down some thoughts into this post, in which I detail what I think will eventually cost the Pirates a chance at landing a bi time player at the deadline.
  • Rudy Owens got roughed up a bit in his start for Indianapolis. He allowed nine hits and six earned runs in just 3.1 innings. It was a rare lapse for Owens who has been extremely solid all year long. Nothing to worry about yet.
  • After a three hit night, Andrew McCutchen is tied with Melky Cabrera for the league lead in batting average at .356, Kristy Robinson writes here about how Cutch is putting up MVP numbers.
  • If you didn't see it yet, McEffect's own Drew Brown made a Pirates first half highlights video that is sure to give you chills. It's a must watch.
  • The Pirates take on the Giants in game two of the series today at 4:05 PM. It's going to be in the mid 90's at first pitch; a tough environment for the starting pitchers - James McDonald and Ryan Vogelsong.
  • I'll be on TribLIVE Radio doing the pre-game show from 2:00-4:00 so be sure to give me a listen.
