Former Pirate Improvement

Ryan Vogelsong's start in Pittsburgh tonight made me make a list of all the former Pirates that found more success after their time here was done. Here's what I came up with:

  • Ryan Vogelsong:
  • 5 years with Pirates: 280.1 IP, 33 GS, 6.00 ERA, 1.406 WHIP
    2011 with Giants: 13-7, 2.71 ERA, all-star appearance
    2012 with Giants: 7-3, 2.26 ERA

  • Adam LaRoche:
  • 3 years with Pirates: 375 G, .265/.340/.496, 58 HR
    2009 with BOS: 6 G, .263/.263/.526 HR
    2009 with ATL: 57 G, .325/.401/.557 12 HR
    2012 with WAS: 75 G, .255/.339/.498 15 HR

  • Brandon Moss:
  • 3 years with PIT: 195 G, .228/.295/.373, 13 HR
    2012 with OAK: 25 G, .268/.333/.683, 10 HR

  • Bronson Arroyo:
  • 3 years with PIT: 29 GS, 53 G, 5.44 ERA
7 years with CIN: 218 GS, 4.11 ERA

  • Jason Schmidt:
  • 6 years with PIT: 44-47, 4.39 ERA
    6 years with SF: 78-37, 3.36 ERA, started all-star game in 2003

  • Jose Bautista:
  • 5 years with PIT: 400 G, .241/.329/.403, 43 HR
    5 years with TOR: 528 G, .263/.386/.555, 140 HR

  • Aramis Ramirez:
  • 6 years with PIT: 559 G, .263/.312/.435, 76 HR
    9 years with CHC: 1124 G, .294/.356/.531, 239 HR

  • Rajai Davis:
  • 2 years with PIT: 44 G, .242/.333/.323, 6 SB
    3 years with OAK: 369 G, .387/.329/.392 116 SB

  • Ty Wigginton:
  • 2 years with PIT: .237/.314/.398, 12 HR
    2 years with BAL: .258/.313/.409 33 HR
    1 year with PHI: .249/.320/.402 9 HR

  • Jon Lieber:
  • 5 years with PIT: 38-47, 4.36 ERA
    5 years with CHC: 50-39, 4.04 ERA
Obviously there are cases in which it has worked the other way around, but not nearly as many. The Pirates have not had any good luck over the last 19 years, and it's grown apparent that they have trouble getting the best out of their players. Like everything else surrounding Pirates baseball, that seems to be making a turn for the better, but don't be surprised if Daniel Moskos gets a save in the World Series in the next few years.
