5/1 Recap | Cardinals 10 Pirates 7

The Pirates lost the opening game of the series tonight by a final score of 10-7. The Pirates refused to go away tonight and fought until the end but came up short. Charlie Morton got the nod and had one of the worst Pirate starting pitcher outings of the year. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowed six runs on eight hits, walked three and struck out five. He was charged with the loss and Jared Hughes and Tony Watson had rough outings to along with Morton. Each of them allowed a home run and Brad Lincoln was the only other pitcher of the night that was able to throw a scoreless inning.

Our offense as of late has looked good, and we have been able to start getting home runs with men on base. Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez each hit two run homeruns tonight to make it four straight two run home runs for the Bucs and Pedro added an RBI single in the eighth as well. Alvarez and Tabata have looked locked in at the plate as of late as the two of them have been on fire these past couple series. Neil Walker had two hits as well for the Bucs.

It's nice that the Pirates offense has been coming together and it was a rare appearance tonight in which the starting pitching did not look good for the Pirates. They had four errors in the field (Garrett Jones, Clint Barmes, Pedro Alvarez, Rod Barajas) which all led to runs and that obviously hurt the Pirates. Game two is tomorrow at 8:15 PM with a good pitching matchup between AJ Burnett and Lance Lynn.
