Yeah I'm coming at you with a rare news report! Because it's not like you can't just turn on your smart phone and be bombarded with sports news!
The Pirates have promoted catcher Tony Sanchez, their first round pick in 2009. Sanchez has had a rough past couple years, but he's played pretty well to this point this year.
In 40 games, Sanchez had hit .277/.370/.390 with 14 doubles, a triple, and no home runs. The numbers are breathtaking, but he's been better as of late and he's playing good defense. Obviously there is something he's doing that the Pirates like, because they want to see what he can do in AAA.
Sanchez is still a guy that is looked at as a future everyday major leaguer, and it'll be interesting to see how he handles the jump to AAA. There's very little hope for him making the big leagues this year, unless it's a September call up with the Pirates out of contention. Rod Barajas is the guy until the end of the year, the Pirates just need to figure out if Sanchez is good enough to trust behind PNC Park's home plate next year.
I'll have the minor league updates coming at you most days so you can check out how Sanchez is doing right here.
