FanGraphs Takes a Look at the Appel Dilemma

If you were curious as to what options the Pirates have moving forward with their draft pick signing dilemmas, FanGraphs has a post that makes it pretty clear - and frankly, things aren't looking great for us. Mark Appel is going to command a lot of money, and the Pirates may or may not have a lot of money to give him depending on what they do with the rest of their picks. The deadline to sign these guys is July 15, and Appel and Boras will certainly hold off until then to sign (if they do sign), so the Pirates are going to have to be careful with the money they give to the rest of their picks in order to save enough of the allotted money to sign Appel. If they take lesser players talent wise just because of their sign-ability and then don't sign Appel anyway, this could be one of the worst drafts in team history. If they do sign him and don't give up too much with the rest of their selections, this will be another great draft for Pirates. The new CBA was supposed to help small market teams, but there's a good chance that it's going to really hurt us.
