My Late and Meaningless Take on Tonight's MLB Draft

The thing with the MLB draft is that only like a couple dozen people on the Internet actually know what they're talking about. I'm not one of them. Everything you'll hear from me and most other bloggers and media members are things that they hear from the scouts that are a part of that couple dozen.

So for me to sit here behind my computer and type all these things like I know what I'm talking about would be dumb.

From what I've heard, I want the Pirates to get Mike Zunino. Why? I don't really know. It's kinda cool that he has potential to be a big bat, but the fact that he's going to be just average defensively at best is a bit alarming. I'm still under the [probably false] belief that defense isn't nearly as important as offense, even for catchers. I'm okay with having an average to slightly below average catcher as long as he can hit.

Chances are that Zunino will be gone by the time the Pirates pick. That means we'll be deciding on who to pick between Deven Marrero (college SS), David Dahl (high school CF), and Max Fried (high school LHP). Obviously you don't want to draft based on need, but it's okay to be nonsensical every once in awhile, so I'm saying that I don't really want Fried. In retrospect today's need could be much different than the need there will be when Fried is actually mature enough to get to the majors, but I'm holding to that nonsensicism. That's absolutely not a word but this is probably the worst blog post I've written this season so screw it.

If it's not Zunino, I guess I'll jive with Marrero. He has the ability to hit and play defense, he just hasn't done much with the bat recently which has a lot of people worried. I feel like they could get him back to where he was and see him start hitting again. It would be nice to get some hope in the farm at the shortstop position, but again at this point it's a pretty bad bet that Marrero will ever be a major league player. That's just how it is with all these picks. It's a crapshoot basically, and the Pirates have had more bad luck than anybody in the last 20 years.

Does it matter to me who the Pirates pick? No, not really. All I'm worried about is winning a series in Cincinnati. I'm also trying to figure out how to stay 21 my entire life, I'll keep you updated on both accounts.
