Andrew McCutchen ripped a single off R.A. Dickey down the left field line in the 3rd inning, which should have extended his hitting streak to 15 games. However, something else happened today that ended that streak.
The Mets challenged McCutchen's double in Saturday night's game, saying that it should have been ruled an error. After a few days of processing and deciding, the league decided to overturn that ruling and charge an error to third baseman Daniel Murphy. It was made final earlier today, and McCutchen's hitting streak was over. When all was said and done, the streak ended at 9 games. You don't see this stuff very often.
The only real significance of this for the Pirates is that McCutchen's average goes from .294 to .290 because of the ruling. It stinks for the fans because seeing a guy go on a long hitting streak always adds a fun little side-story to the game, but we'll get over it. He'll have many more hitting streaks like this before his career ends, and he's already way better at life than R.A. Dickey will ever be.

The play should have been ruled an error, as should have another phantom hit in the series off the bat of Overbay. This ball was at least hit sharply, and should have been handled (or at least knocked down) rather than slid into and kicked foul.
Sorry for McCutchen, as he's a very gifted player and I enjoy his play very much, but he doesn't need help from hometown scoring in order to excel.

Ridiculous comment. Dickey will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for charity this offseason. Try not to be so bitter. It's only a hitting streak.
